PAINTING THE TOWN RED

This is every morning’s ritual in Kathmandu. House owners adorn a dedicated spot on their doorstep sprinkling it with a handful of red kukuma powder, a pinch of beaten rice and a touch of flower petals and herbs. These offerings – designed to welcome visitors to the house and act as a protection talisman – are repeated every day at dawn.
