STORY HUNTING IN BRAZIL

Travelling from North to Central Brazil looking for the perfect story for our Brazil Collection, we discovered it somewhere between Recife Pernambuco and Ouro Preto Minais Gerais.

Chico Rei’s adventures started on the shores of some African kingdom and continued in the gold country of Minais Gerais. This is where we bumped into him… or better said, its remains.

Chico  was an African king from the late 1600s who became slaved with his tribe to hard labour in an Ouro Preto gold mine. He turned a national folk hero when he managed to buy out his tribe freedom and built the first church for the black community in Minais Gerais.

Here are a few snapshots taken along the way to discovering the story and connecting the dots, between meeting graffiti artist Derlon Almeida on the streets of Recife and Chico’s remains in the town of Ouro Preto.

Brazilian graffiti art has kept on enchanting us. This is why we chose to work with Derlon and his great way of reviving the northeastern folk tradition of the woodcuts with his urban take on contemporary culture.
